Description
European, likely British, work for the Egyptian or Sudanese market. Wrought entirely of brass, the thick skull turned in characteristic peaked form surmounted by a pointed finial, with applied visor and robust adjustable nasal, and fitted with a finely-wrought camail of heavy rings. Decorated overall with etched Islamic-style vinework. Latter 19th century. Birmingham was justly known for its production of helmets and mail, both in steel and in brass, notably for the Egyptian government to arm its elite corps of Iron Men, but largely captured by Sudanese Mahdists. Light wear. Overall height 72cm. Condition II600
