Description
The blade of characteristic form, robust and shallowly curved. The iron guard tapering continuously from the cusped ecusson to the rounded quillons. The distinctive pommel expanding continuously to the expanded lobate terminal. 9th-10th century. Excavated. As found. Ex-Egil Haggmann Collection, N.Y. 1974. Note a quite similar example in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York identified as Avar, a related group, see final image below.
