Description
Tanala People, of buckler size, circular, and of coned form. Skillfully carved of a single block of wood with integral grip to the reverse. Retaining its rare bull?s hide covering with the hair on. A divot in the center of the grip showing much use suggests it was used for making fire. 18th-19th century. Used to block spear-thrusts, shows its long working life with wear to the hide. Diameter 35cm. Condition III
