A massive example of characteristic form, the wooden grip with iron ferrule and pommel, the thick, broad blade bellied, with characteristic chisel edge and square tip. Inscribed, REGTO 73 2a [SEGUNDA] BON / 4A (CUARTA) CAMP A 45. In its leather sheath with belt loop. Latter 19th century. The 73rd Infantry Regiment, also known as the Jolo Regiment, was part of the permanent Spanish garrison in the Philippines. It was composed primarily of men from Luzon and the Visayas. The Battle of San Juan del Monte, fought on August 29, 1896, between the Katipuneros under Andres Bonifacio and the 73rd Regiment under General Bernardo Echaluce y Jauregui, is considered the first true battle of the Philippine Revolution.
