Description
Rajput work, a large example, circular, formed of thick hide in slightly domed form and lacquered black overall, set with four gilt-lacquered bosses. With Surya, the Hindu Sun God represented at the center and four large polychromed lions hunting, feeding and at rest, rendered in expert detail, surrounded by scrolling red flowers and green ferns. The gilt-bordered rim with lions and tigers hunting and herbivores frolicking before forest temples. Late 18th century. Light wear, bosses slightly loose. Diameter 48 cm.
