Description
Characteristic of German or Flemish work, with rounded double pommel and cantle, the wooden tree covered entirely in elaborately sculpted and hand-incised gesso, depicting chivalric and biblical motifs involving of numerous highly-detailed figures, including David and Goliath. The underside retaining its original floral damask lining. Includes a folder containing personal correspondence and research on this saddle dating to the 1980s. First half of the 19th century. Overall length 59 cm. Wear and losses overall. Two others are known; the first is in the Wallace Collection, London, the second in the Pitt-Rivers Museum, Oxford. The original 15th century saddle is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Condition IV
