Description
Spanish or Neapolitan work. The cup guard is pierced and chiseled with bold vine motifs interspersed with eight circular cartouches; two contain the Holy Roman Imperial double-headed eagle, two depict mythological creatures, and four bear detailed profiles of renowned heroes of the Holy Roman Empire: Julius Caesar, Charlemagne, Frederic Barbarossa, and Ferdinand II. The cup is finished with a roped rim The pommel and quillons are wrenched and elaborately chiseled with foliate bands and bead finials; the grip retains its complex steel wire wrap. The long, straight, double-edged blade wrought with a short fuller to either side, containing illegible inscriptions. Beginning of the 17th century. Overall length 119 cm. Condition I
