Description
The hilt with sheet gold overlay, with elaborate gold vinework to the bolsters and reinforces. The long, recurved, heirloom blade wrought of actively-patterned Istanbul Baiaz (Istanbul White) wootz, and inscribed in gold in an elaborate cartouche, [MAKER] ‘ALI SHARNAS (?) OWNER HASSAN AGHA 1201 (1786/87 c.e.) In its velvet-covered scabbard with massive steel mounts lavishly inlaid with gold in large vegetal patterns to the obverse and silver geometrical work to the reverse; the locket inscribed, YEAR 1236 (1820/21.) Dated 1820/21. Very light wear, wood core refreshed. Overall length 80 cm. Condition II
