Description

A massive example, the hilt carved of very rare Reza’ye stone found only in the town of Mashad in Northern Iran, where the 8th Imam Reza was martyred at the beginning of the 9th century c.e. The broad, recurved blade is forged of Persian kara khorassan wootz; the forte and bolsters are embellished with fine gold-inlaid vinework. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard. Late 18th century. Reza’ye stone is considered a potent talisman. Imam Reza’s touch is believed to have purified the brackish water from the riverbed where this stone is found; drinking it is considered a blessing. It is also capable of curdling milk. It is very rarely found as a dagger hilt. Minor chip to pommel, wear to pattern. Scabbard lightly worn. Overall length in scabbard 36.2 cm. Condition II
