Description
The grip carved of a single section of white jade, the grip with fingerstalls, the pommel terminating in three fully-modeled flowers on elegant openwork stems, the guard carved with acanthus leaves. The massive, single-edged blade with long backedge wrought of finely-patterned Persian Kara Khorassan wootz damascus steel, inlaid in gold at the forte on each side with a pair of baduh (magic squares) together with large gold cartouches inscribed, NASR MIN ALLAH WU FATH QARIB! (Victory from Allah and conquest nigh!) above a further gold cartouche on the left reading, KAR-E ANAS (?) ISFAHANI (Work of Anas Isfahani) and on the right, KAR-E JANAS (?) ISFAHANII (Work of Janas Isfahani, ) and dated 1111 (1699/-1700 c.e.) In its later velvet-covered wooden scabbard with gilt braid. Dated 1699-1700. Cleaned, minor rubbing to blade. Overall length 98cm. Condition II
