Description
With officer’s grade Walloon-style baskethilt wrought of brass, with spherical pommel and thumbring, the shell guards embossed with flowers, grip with original twisted wire wrap and turkshead knots. The massive blade of moderate curvature, wrought with a narrow fuller at the spine and expanded, chamfered backedge, etched at the right forte with L.W.M. (LOUIS WILLIAM, MARGRAVE, r. 1677-1707) and V.B.B. (VON BADEN BADEN) supporting the coat of arms of the Margraviate of Baden. Last quarter of the 17th century. Minor wear. The Margraves of Baden Baden were defenders of the Holy Roman Empire beginning in 1112. Louis William, known as TurkenLouis, was among the finest European military minds of his day, and was as esteemed as he was feared by the Ottomans. He was especially lauded for the brilliant sally which allowed his troops and those of King Jan Sobieski to raise the Siege of Vienna in 1683, as well as his defeat of the Ottomans at Nis in 1689.
