Description

The classic form worn by the Sipahi, or Ottoman cavalry, with hemispherical bowl wrought of a single plate of steel with applied, finial, brim, nasal, cheek- and neckplates. The captured nasal retained by a rectangular staple with set-screw, the large cheekplates with semicircular notches and rolled edges, embossed at the center with raised, pierced shields for the ears and retaining the original brass studs which retained the lining (now lacking.) The neckplate of rounded, concave form likewise studded with brass studs, connected to the bowl with characteristic pierced, profiled and hinged plates. Second half of the 16th c. Finial and cheekplate hinges replaced in period, three brass studs lacking. The Topkapi Sarayi and Military Museum, Istanbul, and Tower of London Armouries, Leeds, contain similar examples. Overall height 29cm. Condition III
