Description
Likely German, finer work than typically encountered. The two-piece skull with roped comb, the well-formed visor and bevor sharing a common pivot as is typical, the visor with raising stud and characteristic prominent ridge between the occularia, the bevor with separate raising stud and 14 diagonal breaths, retained by a sprung catch. The gorget composed of two pairs of lames with roped edges and riveted borders, with a hook at the right and closing studs to either side. Retains its profiled plumetube. C. 1550-1600. Interior rusted. Helmets of this type are precisely depicted in UBERFALL AUF EINEN GELEITZUG (Attack on a Convoy, ) a 1618 painting by Sebastiaen Vranx, now in the Karlsruhe Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe, Germany.
