Description
Safavid Dynasty, the steel pommel cap and tangbands elaborately inlaid with gold, the guard wrought of fine Persian wootz and likewise finely inlaid with gold, the elephant grips with wire wrap to base. The broad, moderately-curved blade finely wrought of Persian Kara Taban (Brilliant Black) wootz and inscribed in a pair of inlaid cartouches at the right forte, ALLAH, MUHAMMAD! and the name and title of Shah Abbas I of Iran (r. 1588-1629,) ABBAS SHAH YE-BANDE together with the maker’s name, AMAL-E MUHAMMAD WASAN (or VESAN.) Late-17th- early 18th c. Minor wear. Overall length 94.2cm. Condition II
