Description
Zand Dynasty, of fine quality. The elephant grips intricately carved, with gilt binding, guard well engraved with a falcon and its prey and inlaid in gold, the tangbands likewise lavishly inlaid with flowering vinework in gold. The long, curved Persian black wootz blade of exceptionally rare form, transitioning from single- to double-edged just above the elaborately-chiseled and inlaid forte, with a high central ridge from this point all the way to the armor-piercing tip. Chiseled at the right forte with a pair of cartouches, the first containing the name and title of Shah Abbas of Iran, ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET (r. 1588-1629) the second reading, WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH. In its rare, silver-wire seamed sharkskin-covered wooden scabbard with gold- and silver-inlaid suspension bands. Latter 18th c. Wear to grip terminals with minor period repair to one side. Overall length 98.3cm. Condition III
