Description
Made at Tashkent or Kokand, comprising a complete headstall, noseband, bit and breast collar, all of hand-stitched yellow hide, lavishly set with gilded silver fittings bearing characteristic Central Asian embossed and engraved motifs, together with large central mounts, all set with en suite paisley-shaped dangles, and bearing the assayer’s hallmark of Egor Ivanovich Blyumberg of Tiflis (1841-1886) and the date 1864, the 84 zolotniki silver mark (indicating 87.5 purity) and the Tiflis town mark (St. George mounted.) Dated 1864. Light wear, minor losses. Height of headstall 42.6cm. By tradition, presented to Imperial Russian General Mikhail Grigorievich Chernyayev, conqueror of Tashkent, by Khudayr Khan of Kokand with a request for military support against the Amir of Bukhara c. 1864-65.
