Description
Showing distinct Persian influence in the karabela hilt, with horn grips and embossed brass tangband, the guard of steel with long quillons and engraved Arabic inscriptions. The massive blade likely Tbilisi workmanship, broad, with very slight curvature and acute tip, with three fullers to either side, two narrow and one long, the right forte struck with large cartouche containing an illegible Arabic inscription and complex pattern welded forging. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with steel suspension bands and chape en suite with the hilt. Mid-19th century. Wear to mounts, leather rubbed. Overall length 98.6cm./ 38 ¾ inches. Condition III
