Description
An elegant example with spherical filigreed and gilt pommel and ferrule, the grip with elaborate copper wire wrap, the recurved guard likewise gilded, with lionhead terminals. The triangular blade tapering continuously to an acute point, with etched cartouches inscribed, FOUASSE AU ROY DE LA CHINE / SUR LE PONT ST MICHEL A PARIS (Fouasse at the Roy de la Chine [King of China] / on the St. Michel Bridge in Paris) at either side, with a representation of the ostensible monarch on the concave side. Mid-18th century. Pommel possibly replaced in period, gilding slightly rubbed, blade with isolated areas of pitting. Francois-Maximilien Fousse is recorded as a supplier of blades in Paris from 1765-1775. He was the nephew and successor of M. Guyon, proprietor of the Roy de la Chine Bladesmiths on the Pont St Michel in Paris. Fouasse received the title of Master Supplier on Oct. 30, 1765. Among other commissions, he forged rapiers for the bodyguard of the Comte d’Artois. Overall length 38.4cm/ 15 1/8 inches. Condition III
