Description
A very rare example characteristic of Tanjore work, the distinctive guard forged with high central ridge and monster head finial, the rails with profiled terminals and beaded finial. The reinforces engraved, with profiled borders, retaining the broad, well-wrought blade with high central ridge, developing into a pronounced armor-piercing tip. Wrought entirely of fine black Persian wootz with dramatic pattern and contrast, excluding the rails. Retains its velvet-covered wooden scabbard. Beginning of the 17th century. Monster head with minor corrosion, one beaded finial lacking, rails rubbed. Overall length 49cm/ 19 ¼ inches. Condition II
