Description
An early set, stocked in fruitwood, with octagonal butts of archaic flared form, the lockplates with a pronounced teat at the tip. With steel furniture throughout, the buttcaps of solid silver, each with a male bust in Mannerist style, likely a ruler or the owner. The smoothbore barrels with octagonal breeches, finely embellished with armored figures amongst foliage, and elaborate silver plaques of Caesar wearing a laurel wreath with a carved panel above the initial P inlaid in silver at the wrist on each pistol. One pistol retains its original ramrod. 1625-1650. Worn, one cock with small repair, one ramrod lacking. Overall length 37.1cm/ 14 5/8 inches. Condition III
