Description
An extremely rare and iconic Circassian (known among Slavic nations as Tatars) cavalry saber, a weapon in continuous use from approximately the 9th century until the 19th. With characteristically long, lightly curved blade of robust triangular section, wrought with a narrow fuller along the spine on either side, and distinctive quadrangular thrusting tip beginning at the pronounced yelman block and accounting for approximately one quarter of the blades total length. Retains its very rare original guard and octagonal pommel, together with a scabbard suspension band. 14th-15th century. Good excavated condition. Overall length 110.7cm/ 43 ¾ inches.
