Description
Made in Kubachi, the renowned center of Caucasian arms making for over a thousand years. The grip of two plaques of horn with embossed, engraved nielloed and gilded silver mounts, the pommel with additional applied silver flowering vinework band set with amethysts and turquoises. The broad blade with single offset fuller and tapered point inscribed by the maker BAZALAI IDRIS, one of the most famous Caucasian blade smiths. The silk velvet-covered wooden scabbard with large embossed, engraved, nielloed and gilded mounts en suite with the hilt, inscribed on the reverse of the locket, WORK OF ZAKARI Year 1274 (1857/58 c.e.) Retains its by-knife. Dated 1857. Minor wear. Overall length 51.1cm/ 20 1/8 inches. Condition II
