Description

Made for a Moro datu or chief, likely in Maguindanao. Composed of a series of solid brass plates which completely cover the body nearly to the knee, intricately interconnected by heavy, hardened bronze rings, the large central plates set with silver mounts comprising eight heavy silver flowers. The sleeves wrought of finer rings than those of the body. Second half of the 19th century. Minor wear. Overall length from nape to hem 62.2cm/ 24 1/2 inches. Mid-19th century or earlier. The Moros adopted plate and mail armor worn by Persian and Indian traders in the 15th-16th century. It was quite flexible and very strong,
allowing a warrior to both run and fight while stopping sword and spear attacks. Many armors were taken by Spanish and American forces before and during the Insurrection and are very rarely found on the market today. PHOTO SHOWN FOR REFERENCE ONLY. IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LOT. Condition II
