Description
A rare fully-mounted latter Edo era naginata naoshi sword in wakizashi length, the koshirae comprising fine engraved silver fuchi, kashira and habaki. With black tsuka ito and gilt shakudo ebi menuki, the black saya with tiny autumn leaves suspended in clear lacquer. With shakudo and gold kozuka and heirloom kogatana well worn. The fine chiseled steel tsuba with samurai pondering a stormy sea. The robust older mumei blade adapted from or influenced by a naginata, in good polish with clear suguha with some activity and visible grain. 17th-18th century. Blade with light scratches to kissaki. Overall length 72.1cm/28.3/8 inches, nagasa 40.6cm /16 inches. Condition III
