A fine, elegant example, the fruitwood stock with separately applied block for the lock, inlaid throughout with polished staghorn and bone panels decorated with scrollwork and a hunter and hunting animals, including hounds, stags, rabbits and birds, with large patchbox cover, cheekrest and forearm, buttplate and ramrod finial embellished en suite. The fine lock with exposed wheel and stepped, balustered dog, the functional pan cover actuated by a button, and engraved overall with hounds running down a stag, the dog likewise engraved with a dragon and lion head. The fine, octagonal barrel with swamped muzzle deeply rifled, with front and flip up rear sights, signed MICHAEL WAGNER IN CRONACH 1704 and struck with his mark. Dated 1704. A comparable example from the W. Keith Neal Collection likewise made by Michael Wagner dated 1692 was sold at Christie’s on November 9, 2000, Lot 8934 for 7,637 GBP, while a much simpler rifle, also signed by Wagner and dated 1708, sold at Amoskeag Auctions on November 23, 2019 for $5581.
