Description
A rare type of large dimensions, the hilt of brass, engraved, pierced and gilded. When the sprung catch is depressed, the pommel cap opens to reveal a set of five implements, including a knife, fork, skewer, pickle spear and toothpick, all wrought of steel and brass. The long, lightly curved blade wrought with a central fuller and back edge and etched with meandering vine patterns at the forte on each side, together with scenes of hounds pursuing wild boars. The wooden scabbard of wood covered in fine green velum with brass mounts embellished en suite with the hilt. Mid-18th century. Overall length 69.5cm. Minor wear overall, blade with age-toning, velum rubbed. Condition II
