Description

A massive example, French work by master metalworker G. Creuzan, Bordeaux and so marked. Made for presentation to an Ottoman of considerable rank, likely the sultan. The grip of characteristic waisted form, carved of a single large section of rhinoceros. The massive, handwrought blade with pronounced central ridge flanked by two narrow fullers showing fine, active pattern-welded damascus forging, the forte with original bright polish inscribed with the makers name in gold. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with finely embossed and engraved silver mounts decorated in Ottomanesque motifs. Latter19th century. Velvet well worn. Overall length 48.4cm. Condition II
