Description
A private purchase saber made to order for an officer of hussars or light cavalry. The pommel modeled with an intricately-detailed lion head and backstrap, and distinctive “garde perle’.” The guard elaborately pierced and tapered at the quillons, with lozenge-shaped langets embellished with flowering vinework, the leather-covered grip retains its original braided copper wire wrap. The long, broad, curved blade with narrow back and broad central fuller etched with stands of arms and flowers for much of its length on each side, together with a blank panel, ostensibly for the owner’s name, the last few inches of the blade retaining much original edge. In its brass scabbard with leather panels, twin suspension bands and iron chape. Beginning of the 19th century. Minor dent to scabbard tip. Overall length 95.7cm. Condition II
