Description
An extremely rare type, the work of a Tiflis (Tbilisi) master. The persiform hilt with steel guard chiseled with flowering vinework, the polished shirmani grips with gilt beaded tangband and nielloed silver bosses. The broad, lightly-curved blade wrought of superb twistcore damascus steel, with three fullers to each side and a raised panel at the right forte with a gold-inlaid maker’s mark and a Georgian inscription inlaid in gold which reads, RELY ON A SWORD WHICH HAS SEEN BATTLE. In its silver scabbard engraved with imbricated scales, nielloed and gilded on the obverse, the reverse with open panels over black leather, the throat gilded and inscribed in Georgian, I BELONG TO KNYAZ TEIMURAZ JANDIERI. The suspension bands and chape engraved steel en suite with the guard. Early 19th century. Minor wear. Overall length 97cm. The Jandieri were an ancient Georgian noble family of the Kingdom of Kakheti. They were raised to princely rank by King Teimuraz I in 1628, after distinguishing themselves against the invading Persian army. They were again recognized after the annexation of Georgia by Imperial order of the Russian Empire in 1829 as the Princes Jandierov. A portrait of I.P. Jandieri, a close relative of Prince Teimuraz, hangs in the State Historical Art Museum of Georgia, Tbilisi. Condition II
