Description
A superb example, the grips carved of green jade, with three 22-karat gold studs set with rubies on each side, the tangband finely inlaid with gold vinework. The elegant crossguard with elaborate gold inlaid quillons and edges as well. The exceptional Persian heirloom blade forged of the finest Persian black wootz retaining its original surface and inlaid at the right forte with a pair of cartouches, the first reading WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH, the second an unusual combination of Arabic characters, possibly of Sufi significance. In its pale green velvet-covered wooden scabbard silver braid, the chape likewise carved of a single piece of jade. Mid-18th century. Velvet rubbed, chape slightly loose. Overall length 103cm.
