Description

The large hilt and mounts wrought entirely of silver, superbly embossed and engraved in motifs depicting Greek Orthodox referents within a Revolutionary context designed to convey a visual narrative to those who supported the Revolution: the dragon, winged and fanged, representing the Ottoman oppressors, and the dove with an olive wreath in its beak, representing the peace of the Holy Spirit, amongst vases and festoons of flowers signifying victory, all framed in the rococo borders characteristic of Greek Neoclassicism. Retains its rare chained silver chock. The well-wrought Albanian blade with maker’s mark. First quarter of the 19th century. The exceptional level of jeweler’s skills are among the best work of the period. Overall length 78.2cm. Condition II
