Description
An Ottoman tilsimli gomlegi, of characteristic T-form handwoven linen, the sides expanding toward the hem. Finely painted in symmetrical panels of BLUE AND WHITE with broad borders of gold, containing superbly calligraphed quotations from Qur’an in sulus (thulth, ) including Allah! Muhammad!, the 99 Names of God and the Shahada. 19th-20TH century. Minor signs of wear. Such shirts, worn in battle, provided spiritual protection. Length from nape to hem 96.5cm. Condition I
