Description
Mughal work, with persianate wrought steel hilt terminating in a fully-modelled parrots head, with turquoise eyes, finely inlaid overall in complex flowering vine motifs in gold. The fine, robust Persian heirloom blade forged of black wootz, and chiseled at the right forte with a pair of cartouches, the upper containing MALIK [KING] and an untranslated name, the lower with a well-delineated lion. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with mounts of steel inlaid in gold en suite with the hilt. Latter 17th century. Hilt with minor areas of rust and toning, one turquoise lacking. Leather worn. Overall length 90cm Condition III
