Description

German work, a rarely encountered full suit. The burgonet helmet with well-wrought skull, characteristic high comb, peaked visor and neck guard. The large earpieces inletted at the upper edge to suit the visor, the whole embellished with studded borders and retaining portions of the rare original leather borders. The gorget composed of multiple profiled lames with roped edges. Breastplate with central ridge and articulated gussets and apertures for mounting a lance rest, with massive roped reinforce. The backplate en suite, connecting to the breastplate with straps and a waist belt. With complete arm defenses, the spaulders of seven lames each. The upper canons terminating in rolled and roped borders, the inner arms protected by winged couters, the lower canons en suite with rolled edges. The well-articulated gauntlets composed of seven plates in addition to the fingers and thumb (several lacking.) The fauld and tassets composed of three plates each. Each cuisse composed of a single plate with rolled and roped edge and struck with deep German makers marks, each knee cop constructed of four plates with wings. The finely formed greaves with sprung catches, the multiple-lame sabatons of kuhmaul or cowmouth style with expanded toe, following the civilian fashion of the period. Mid-16th century. General wear, greaves associated in period, most fingers lacking, possible restorations to tassets, some straps lacking, some replaced, leather friable, areas of minor rust. Overall height 177cm.
