Description

A very rare example, the hilt of archaic form, with octagonal shirmani grips slightly flared at the guard, the guard with defined upper langet but incipient lower, and Persianate pommel, both guard and pommel inlaid with tulips in a geometrical cartouche in gold. The robust blade very lightly curved, with broad forte tapering substantially at the spine, and single-edged, with chamfered cutting edge and distinct expansion at the long back edge terminating in an armor-piercing tip but lacking a yelman block. Wrought of an unusual type of wootz, neither Persian nor Ottoman, likely by local smiths. Inscribed in a gold cartouche, OWNER MEHMED GHARDAR (?) 1210 (1795/6 c.e.) In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with gilt thread embroidery in relief, the steel mounts inlaid in gold en suite with the hilt. Dated 1795/6. Worn overall, blade with areas of isolated pitting and rust, mounts with areas of rust, velvet and embroidery well worn, possibly replaced during working life. Overall length 89.5cm/ 35.25”.
