Description
The robust black horn hilt with fingerstalls and rounded pommel, the fine, recurved blade multi-fullered on the obverse, the reverse with a single narrow fuller at the spine. Inscribed AL HAJ MEHMED and dated 1282 a.h. (1865 c.e.). In its wooden scabbard with embossed and chased silver mounts displaying flowering vine motifs and terminating in a dolphin head finial. Dated 1865. The Surmene is named for the town near Trabzon on the Black Sea whence the form originated. Overall length 59.4cm / 23 ??. Condition II
