A fine and extremely scarce example, the handwrought steel head with long, tapering upper terminal and broad, round lower edge reminiscent of a voulge, with profiling to the base of the back edge, the poll a precise fit with the fine, hardwood haft with lightly back-curved grip and broad terminal with carved motif, and set with a fine, early flintlock mechanism, with thick cock and lockplate retaining characteristics of its wheel-lock predecessor, the whole engraved in flowering vinework with turned post trigger. The short barrel octagonal at the breech with molded rings turning to round, the muzzle a relatively large caliber smoothbore. C. 1600-1650. Minor wear, delamination to either side of the head. Overall length 89.3cm / 35 1/8?.
