A seldom-encountered type strongly associated with the Siege of Vienna in 1683, due to similar examples found in the abandoned Ottoman camp following the rout by King Jan Sobieski. The fine, faceted grip carved of a single large section of walrus tusk inlaid with floral motifs, the curved double-edged blade with areas of Persian black wootz visible. In its original, leather-covered wooden scabbard with silver seam and gilded silver mounts with engraved borders. Latter 17th century. Repair to chape, gilding rubbed. Overall length 27.1 cm / 10 1/2?. Condition III
